Rich with History
Full of heritage and adventure, the town of Port Alberni comes with a very interesting history. The town was originally two separate cities known as Port Alberni and Alberni, which later merged in 1967 after a destructive tsunami hit in 1964. While mining, logging, farming and fishing are essential to this area, forestry has been the number one industry that has kept the Alberni Valley economically strong. Visit the Alberni Valley Museum to find out more about the rich history of Port Alberni.
Among its many salmon related activities, this annual Port Alberni event features a fabulous fishing derby. The festival is the thing to do in Port Alberni during the Labour Day Weekend.
Cheer on the many motorcyclists as they travel in solid formation through the Alberni Valley and deliver a massive haul of toys for children in the community -where child poverty is among the highest in British Columbia.
Enjoy games, food, and fun at the annual Okee Dokee Slo-Pitch Tournament. Approximately 80 slo-pitch teams show up in Port Alberni for this tournament every year. The event runs over three days during the Canada Day Weekend. There is music in the evenings and any funds raised during the event go to various local charities.
Dating back to the summer of 1928, the first Sproat Lake Regatta event included boats as fast as 20 horsepower and races of up to five miles. Formed in June 1930, the Sproat Lake Motor Boat Club decided to expand this fun event. Nowadays, visitors can enjoy swimming and water sport competitions and performances, as well as the thrilling races! Admission is by donation.
Explore the maze of exhibits, animal displays, and food booths in the Port Alberni community. In early September you can learn why Port Alberni's midway, agriculture shows, and logging demonstrations are simply one of the best attractions around.
